KeePass 2

KeePass 2 Manager is an application for the secure management of passwords. With this guide, you will learn how to set up KeePass 2 under Windows to manage your login data.



Start KeePass 2 and create a new database
  1. Search for "KeePass" in the Windows start menu and start the application by double-clicking on the icon.
  2. In the main KeePass 2 window, click on "File" in the top menu bar.
  3. Select "New" from the drop-down menu. This will open a new window.
  4. Enter a descriptive name for your database in the "Database Name" field, for example "MyPwDB".
  5. Select a storage location for your database by clicking on "Browse" and selecting the desired directory. Then click on "Save".
  6.    It is recommended to store the file, the vault, in the synchronization folder of your cloud storage. (Nextcloud or FAUBox) This ensures that your data is backed up online and locally.

  7. You will now be asked to set a master password. This password serves as the main access to your entire password database. Enter a strong master password and confirm it in the "Repeat" field. Observe the notes on password security displayed below the field.
  8. Optional: Fill in additional information such as "User" and "URL" if you wish.
  9. Click on "OK" to create the new database.

Adding entries to your database
  1. Click on "Add Entry" in the top menu.
  2. A new window will open. Fill in the required fields such as "Title", "Username" and "Password".
  3. Optional: Add further information such as "URL", "Notes" or "Expiration Time" if desired.
  4. Click on "OK" to save the entry.

Retrieving entries from your database
  1. To access your passwords, open KeePass 2 and enter your previously set master password.
  2. You will see your saved entries in the main view of KeePass 2. Use the search bar at the top right to find entries quickly.
  3. To use a password, double-click on the corresponding entry. You can also right-click on the entry and select "Copy Username" or "Copy Password".
  4. Use the copied information in the corresponding login screen or web page.
  5. If desired, you can also use the Auto-Type function by highlighting the entry and selecting "Perform Auto-Type" (Ctrl + V).
Note: Back up your KeePass database regularly and remember to keep the master password secret. A secure master passphrase is critical to the security of your entire password database.
